Biography

After graduation, Don Guinn began his career with the Bell System as an assistant engineer for the Pacific Telephone & Telegraph Company in Portland. He worked in engineering positions with Pacific Northwest Bell before taking a position with AT&T in New York as a plant sales and service supervisor in 1964. He returned to Pacific Northwest Bell in Seattle as a plant manager in 1965, rising to vice president of engineering for network services in 1976. He then worked at AT&T in assistant vice president positions for Network Operations and Customer Facilities and as vice president for Customer Services and Network Services, before his appointment as chairman of the board of Pacific Telephone and Telegraph in San Francisco in 1980. Don became chairman and chief executive officer of Pacific Telesis Group in 1984, retiring in 1988. He has served on the board of directors of 19 companies, the board of trustees for the California Institute of Technology, and as a member of numerous committees.
